A piece of Lawton's history has been revived with new life and purpose. Doe Doe Park, on the corner of Southwest Sheridan Road and D Avenue, was built in the 1940's, which offered a wide variety of community activities such as a large swimming pool, amusement rides, a playground, roller skating rink and a small petting zoo.
A move toward desegregation of public facilities in Lawton, and the park's owner's refusal to allow African Americans and Native Americans in the park fueled a barrage of protests and demonstrations that lasted into the late 1960's.
The park was finally opened to "all law-abiding citizens, blacks or whites, regardless of national origin, or any individual of good will." Doe Doe Park closed in 1985 as a result of a failed redevelopment effort and for years sat dormant and unused.
Most of its structures were dismantled in 1998, but recently restoration of old bridges and a large pavilion have taken place. The park is now being used for Christian music concerts, conferences, family reunions, picnics and other outdoor activities for the whole community. To God be the Glory...
